Mentoring Mondays-Embracing Change

Happy Mentoring Young Professionals!

Every year around this time in Chicago I get extremely excited for fall to approach. Fall, to me, represents a season of change and new beginnings. We have the opportunity to embrace the seasons as they change just like we have the opportunity to embrace change in our daily lives but in order to fully embrace change we must take time to reflect and figure out the areas of our lives we wish to improve.

Here is how I prepare myself for change:

  1. Meditate or give yourself long breaks of silence

    1. When we meditate or shut our minds off from the outside world we give ourselves the opportunity to look within and find answers from our intuition. A lot of what one needs to know is already inside them, it’s just a matter of quieting our minds to listen.

  2. Act, don’t react

    1. During times of change there might be a lot of moving parts in your life that will affect your social/work life. Some people will try and stop you from changing because they don’t want to be left behind. Prepare yourself for this and act accordingly, learn to separate yourself from these people as you embrace growing opportunities & try not to react to the people who don’t want you to change… reacting will just slow down the process

  3. Understand people won’t necessarily understand why you are changing

    1. The only person who likes change is a wet baby. People don’t like change. People don’t like to see other people change. There is something comforting about staying just as we are… but staying just as we are kind of defeats the human experience. We are here to learn and grow. Not everyone understands this and some never change. Smile at the ones who don’t understand you are doing something positive for yourself and keep pushing forward.

  4. Commit and follow through

    1. The biggest success anyone can have in life is actually following through with plans to change. When you follow through you are informing the universe that you are ready for something new and exciting for your life. If you don’t follow through you are just holding yourself back from the life you were meant to have.

Change truly has to come from within. Whether you are changing for your job or personal life you have to be the motivator behind the change in your life. No one is going to hand you a positive life change on a silver platter. If you want to win the lottery, you literally have to go out and buy the ticket. Same thing goes for change. If you want to change, you have to take the necessary steps to do so.

Please feel free to engage in the following questions:

  • How do you implement change in your daily life?

  • When was the last time you considered making a change in your life?

  • Do you feel change is embraced by your co-workers and peers?

     Kind Regards,
