Hey Heather,
I totally agree with James. CMA certification is getting more known globally and as he said that some companies they start to require CMA in their educational requirements for their Jobs.
CMA is never a waste of time, on the contrary it adds up to your knowledge and presents you more brightly than other accountants with no certification.
I have my MBA and I am doing my CMA now and most probably CPA afterward. Who knows with all those certification and with my age I think I am doing a great investment with those two certifications in addition to my MBA.
So I advise you to go for it!!!

While the CMA isn't as well recognized outside of the accounting profession as is the CPA, I don't think that the CMA is a waste of time at all. As Lon pointed out, the CMA continues to gain recognition and I see numerous job ads that require a CMA / MBA / CPA designation. You might even consider that the CMA is more distinctive simply because not as many people have it. It shows you're not the employee who blindly follows the beaten path. You're part of an elite club :=)
In regards to your concern about having the time or resources to take the CPA exam, I can tell you from experience that the CMA requires a significant amount of study, comparable to the time required for the CPA. And, the best I can recall, the CMA actually ended up being slightly more expensive for me to take.
Good Luck.

Subject: CMA or NO?
I have recently been looking into obtaining a CMA. Personally do not have the time or resources to obtain MBA or CPA. It truly is out of the question. I recently asked the advise of a recruiter if she thinks it would be the way to go for me and she said "no", that it's a waste of time, not credible and that no companies seek people with a CMA. Is this true? When I go on indeed and look at Controller jobs, which is ultimately what I would prefer to do, they lump CMA along with the "desired" CPA and MBA? Am I missing something here or is she?
