CMA Exam Part 1

  • 1.  CMA Exam Part 1

    Posted 05-25-2012 03:31 AM

    Dear all,

I am getting bit scared reading that most of you are using Gleim. I am currently studying with Hock. Is somebody also studying with Hock or maybe already passed the exam with the Hock materials?

What about examples from old CMA exams? Do you know where I can find/buy some?

Some of you are referring to the IMA book. Could you please specify what it is?

    Thanks for your replies.

I wouldn't worry too much.  I used Gleim and really hated it- its just the most popular around here.  I have heard great things about Hock and would use them if I had to do it over.

    Melaine,

Go to your My Enrollments under Learning Center (IMA homepage). You should see "CMA Exam Support Package" which includes several questions as you wish.

About HOCK, I have been comparing both Gleim and HOCK and in my opinion a person who has a strong backround with these general topics can success by either HOCK or GLEIM. The important thing is trying to understand well the concepts and solve as many questions as many you can.

    Good luck

    Melaine,

Just another suggestion, I hope you may find it helpful.
I used a different strategy in undertaking the exams. I passed the last exam last year and passed all exams on one sit so I think the strategy worked.
IMA handbook & exam guide provide the study materials and the books to use. They even mention which chapters you need to study. I simply bought the books and studied them. I did the drill using the examples or questions provided in the books. I found that really helpful. Most of the real CMA questions really follow the syllabus they mentioned in the handbook. Of course you need to allow some time to study all the books. I usually took 3-6 months to prepare for an exam. Of course it could be shorter if you have time to study more intensively.
One thing we must note is that CMA exams are test of breadth. So please do not miss even a single topic in the syllabus if you want to be successful. The questions are never really difficult but the variety and coverage are broad. In the exams you will find that you are provided with lots of data. Not all of them are relevant. In fact you only need to see the relevant data and the calculations are rather simple. I think that mimics the real situation we are facing in our works. We do not do complicated calculations but we need to sort out the relevant information. The most important thing to really concentrate and always get ahead of time. I usually broke down the test time in 30- minute intervals. In every interval, I focused to be able to answer certain amount of questions so that I could always be ahead of time.
Another thing is I found it was a good strategy if you could answer correctly at least 80% of the multiple choice questions. The reason is that I found I was given only a short time to answer essay questions. For a non native English speaker like I am, I always need to take some time to answer in English. Plus, the spreadsheet is difficult to navigate. It is not Excel and you may lose time on that.

    Hi Melanie!

I passed both parts on the first try using Hock. However, I think that it ultimately is going to depend how much a person really puts into studying. Also, for those sitting for the CMA exam that do not have a background in accounting, Hock provides an "assumed knowledge" textbook. From what I understand, using Gleim you are expected to already know and understand certain concepts. I do well when I have deadlines. I gave myself more than enough time to study for part one. For part two, I gave myself 1 month. I read the entire textbook and did between 60-100 practice questions per day. People seem to stress over the essay; however, if you truly understand the concepts you will not have a problem.

    Best of luck to you!

    Hi Lindsay

I am so happy to hear you say that because I am thinking about taking Part I in September and Part 2 in October.  I will study both parts between now and July but do a final review for Part I in August to sit the beginning of September and then do final review for Part 2 in Sept/Oct and sit end of October.

I need to work on truly understanding the material inside and out so I do not take so long on the essay questions.  My biggest issue is my timing.

    Thanks

Veronica- time management is truly key! If you passed the CPA exam I am confident that you will have no problem preparing for the CMA. It is my understanding that they are comparable in difficulty. How long did it take you to prep for the CPA if you don't mind me asking? Do you feel that the CPA or CMA is going to be more useful (in a practical manner) in your career? The only reason I ask is because I am wondering if I should consider sitting for the CPA. ------------------------------------------- Lindsay Elizondo Accountant Fairbanks AK United States -------------------------------------------

    Lindsay

From what I gather so far the CMA covers the same topics but with much much more depth.  So I find myself remembering that when I was studying for the CPA exam some of the heavily tested topics on the CMA was not heavily tested on the CPA and I had blown it off! (kinda regret now)

I took and passed all four parts of the CPA exam in 6 months (not recommended)

The CMA will definitely advance me in my career.  Initially I was in public accounting but since I moved to private.  I will become a tremendous asset to my company because I know exactly what the external auditors are looking for and also I know how to think internally regarding accounting without violating any accounting rules.

CPA and CMA is an awesome combination and I hope I help you with your decision to seek both certifications.

As someone who just sat for the CMA and is actively studying for the CPA- they aren't that much alike.  The CPA has TONS more info to cover.  Part 1 of the CMA is like BEC on the CPA, part 2 is BEC+ a little FAR plus some extra "sprinkles".  LOL.  Almost none of REG and AUD is covered on the CMA, and they are both beasts.

I totally agree the CPA exam has alot more information you have to cover compared to the CMA.  I officially passed the CPA in February of 2011.  Oddly BEC was my beast with the CPA exam but here I am studying and taking the CMA because I must like the torture lol.

IMA books are the materials issued by the institute, i have tried it for Part 1 its extremely good. i have passed last Feb 2012

Essay questions are in two scenarios , one of them was exactly like the IMA materials essay practice questions, may be  by coincidence but i trust them.

Mohammad: Though IMA material seems sufficient, I would highly recommend Gleim. I found IMA questions easier than actual exam questions. But Gleim was lot closer to actual exam and prepared me well. Basically Gleim prepared my mind to go in various " thinking modes"as soon as I read key words.

    Hope this helps.

    Dear Marie,

I believe it's personal preference. I've asked the same question before and I have decided to use Hock texts since I understand the topics easier than Gleim.  I focus on the concepts. However, I'm practicing with the Gleim questions and Test Prep software (due to volume) and there seems to be no problem. Both materials compliment each other.

Now, I'm starting to answer the IMA questions attached on the kit. Talk about volume.
    Best of luck to us!

The IMA has its own materials (CMA Learning System) to prepare for the CMA exam.  It is similar to Hock and Gleim.   I used the IMA/CMA learning system to prepare for the exam.  I do not think it matters which review system you utilize for the exam.  It will come down to your understanding of the material for the exam.  The IMA does suggest approximately 150 hours of study time for the exam.

You should have access to some sample m/c and essay questions.  When you paid IMA for your entrance fee, you should have received access to the CMA Support Package.  Log into your IMA account, select learning center dashboard, select my learning, then CMA support package.  In the introduction to the exam tab, there upper right hand corner has a button labeled attachments.  Within the attachments are Pdf files with sample m/c questions and essays.  In addition, you should have an online practice exam within your support package.

    Dear Melanie,

I used Hock materials and passed Part 1.  It should be enough. Audio recordings helped me a lot.

    Hi Marie,

I used Hock and have passed Feb. 2012 CMA Exam Part 1. You can download the ExamSuccess Study Software from their website. There are 1,000+ multiple questions and I have done 800+. I think I must have done great in the multiple choices part since I didn't have time to study for the essay part at all. During the time taking the exam, I was stuck in every single question in the eassy part. Therefore, if you study hard for both multiple and eassy, I am pretty sure you will pass.
