How a Banker Thinks: How Does your banker see your numbers, what’s important and why?

Steve will delve into the mind of a banker. Why are certain ratios important? What does your banker see when looking at your financials? Why does your banker seek to structure your financing a certain way? What “Red Flags” does you banker look for in your financials? What is reasonable to request and what’s a non-starter? Steve will go into all of this and more as he pulls back the curtain on the profession he has enjoyed for almost 30 years.

Steve Watts, Senior Vice President, Commercial Banking Team Leader, Columbia Bank

Steve is responsible for leading a team of seasoned, client-focused commercial lenders in both Portland and Vancouver and for growing and tending to his own assortment of commercial relationships. His area of expertise resides in lines of credit, term loans and real estate loans for closely held businesses, professional firms and non-profit organizations.

Steve has over 29 years of experience in banking, including 25 years as a commercial banker. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Oregon State University and is a graduate of Pacific Coast Banking School, a graduate level program in banking. Steve is actively involved in his local community, currently serving as a board member and delivery driver for the Meals on Wheels People and as President of the Rotary Club of Portland.

Jay Richardson is a partner at the full service law firm of Cosgrave Vergeer Kester LLP.  He is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant, and is certified in Financial Management by the Institute of Management Accountants.  His practice emphasizes taxation, business formation and transactions, estate planning, and employee benefit plan consulting.  Prior to going into private practice he was an ERISA consultant for Pricewaterhouse Coopers.

Deanna Franco is a partner at the full service law firm of Cosgrave Vergeer Kester LLP.  Licensed in both Oregon and Washington, Deanna has been practicing law for over 16 years providing advice and counsel to clients in the areas of:  estate and tax planning, probate and trust administration (including tax compliance), guardianship and conservatorship matters, entity formation, governance and general business planning, as well as associated commercial and residential real estate transactions.
