Big Brothers Big Sisters:
Big Brothers Big Sisters is an organization that matches adults with children, ages 5 through young adulthood, to serve as a mentor and friend. Many of the children in this program are at-risk youth who do not have access to a consistent and stable relationship at home. Most “Bigs” who volunteer in the program have a very direct and lasting impact on the lives of the “Littles” they work with. This program allows volunteer to provide support and mentorship to young individuals as they grow and develop. The time commitment is typically 6-10 hours a month, which can be fulfilled through numerous ways, whether it be planning activities to do together or even helping a Little with homework. Big Brothers Big Sisters has recently gone virtual thanks to the support of Cummins, and they are trying to recruit more individuals to be part of the program. The organization typically offers tons of opportunities to get involved with a paired “Little”, but the program is flexible and you ultimately decide how much you want to put into it. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance/ Tax-Aide:
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax-Aide programs have been helping those in Bartholomew County with their taxes for over 20 years. Supported by United Way and AARP respectively, these programs target low income individuals, families, and the elderly to assist in free tax services. With completing over 1,000 tax returns last year alone, the programs allow residents to reinvest more of their tax return back into the community, helping to pay things such as rent and utilities, instead of going towards paid tax preparation services. If you are interested in learning more, contact Cassie Kuczmanski at cassandra.kuczmanski@cummins.com.
